Last weekend Dumb Eyes participated in ONN/OF, an art exhibition and “light festival” in Ballard. The show took place inside an 11,000 Sq Ft Ballard warehouse called The Sweater Factory. The curators, Susan Robb, Sierra Stinson, and Jim Demetre invited several artists to create visual art, performance, installation, projection, music, and workshops all working with the idea of “light”. Their aim was “…to create an environment that not only lets people escape the cold and solitude that comes with Seattle’s winter season but to build a warm and energizing experience that might produce enough radiance to help see Seattle through the rest of the winter.”

Dumb Eyes created an interactive installation called “Parliament Hill”. The audience was presented with a screen showing a giant cube floating above Parliament Hill in London. The cube, which was covered with changing patterns and colours, could be controlled with the movement of viewer’s hands.

Gay City approached artists to work with people telling stories regarding HIV/AIDS as part of HIV30, a collaboration of Seattle activists working together to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Our work is featured on the HIV30 site and can be seen on the red wall along Broadway in Capitol Hill, Seattle.

This is the story by Kate, the writer we we’re paired with.

“HIV is… not who I am, it is what I have. It does not define me. I’m still the person I was before I become HIV positive. I can still be touched, held, kissed, and loved. When people find out I have HIV, I’m looked at as contagious and unlovable. Although if I had cancer or diabetes, I would be socially accepted. These were the feelings I had some 20 years ago and I believe that others must have felt the same way. With a feeling of anger building inside me, I looked down at my son realizing something had to change.

Since my son was born in the early years before treatment, I realized knowledge was the key to people understanding HIV, my son, and me. I thank God every day for giving me an HIV negative son. It’s hard for me to believe that it’s been 30 years, 20 of which I have been positive. With the medicines now and a greater understand of how the virus works, we can live a long life. Though the stigma is still out there, it’s not as strong compared to the earlier years. HIV/AIDS is still a battle, and it’s a battle I will continue to fight, so that someday HIV/AIDS can be openly talked about and socially accepted as other medical conditions are accepted now. I’m still here to live another day, to be touched, hugged, and loved. As all of us living with HIV should be!

I shall pray that some day a cure or vaccine will be able to stop this. Until then, please remember we are all human.”

If you would like to get involved send your stories, photos, or anything else regarding HIV/AIDS in Seattle to Robert at robert@gaycity.org.
